What is the ripple effect?
The ripple effect is an initiative of the savewater!® Alliance. It was established in April 2011 as both a trial for providing its member organisations with recommendations for implementing social media into their existing marketing strategy and for promoting savewater!® to a wider audience – those interested in sustainability, gardening, and eco-friendly products and services – in line with its aim: Helping all communities value water.
Not only is it a play on words (because we’re from The savewater!® Alliance, see), it is the concept that by making one small change, you can have in impact on those around you. If you can reduce your waste now others will benefit tomorrow. If you choose sustainable products, the benefits will greatly effect those around you now and in the future. And if you can encourage others to do the same, the ripple effect is amazing.
Who is the savewater!® Alliance?
The savewater!® Alliance works with member water businesses, government agencies and product companies to deliver water conservation programs throughout Australia. savewater!® offers a combination of web resources and practical programs to help all Australians change the way they use water.
The savewater!® Alliance Inc. was officially incorporated in Victoria on 9th June 2004 as a not-for-profit association. Its aim is to accelerate water conservation behaviour change and water saving product purchasing in line with government and water industry needs. savewater!® also aims to support product and service suppliers by increasing community awareness of their product solutions.
The savewater!® Alliance currently has regional and metropolitan water businesses as members from Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania the Northern Territory and New South Wales. Visit the Members section to see if your local water provider is part of the Alliance. We are working towards a national membership base.
The small team at savewater!® deliver a range of water conservation initiatives in conjunction with members and other supporters of the Alliance. The activities of savewater!® are overseen by a Board, which includes representatives from six Alliance members.
How savewater!® works
By working together with many water businesses, government organisations and product suppliers, the savewater!® Alliance model generates strong synergies – leading to economies of scale, simple communication messages and significant cost reductions. Specifically, the savewater!® Alliance currently:
- manages the savewater.com.au website
- conducts major water conservation exhibitions like the various state Home Shows and Garden Shows on behalf of government and suppliers
- manages the savewater! awards® across Australia
- undertakes programs like the savewater!® efficiency service for businesses and schools
- conducts ongoing savewater!® competitions and prize giveaways, along with quantitative market research and various other marketing activities
savewater!® initiatives are designed to:
- provide independent expert advice
- provide a one-stop-shop for information on water conservation
- provide access to water and energy saving products
- present real life examples of water conservation in action
- encourage use of local knowledge, experience and products
Independent expert advice
savewater.com.au has been developed to provide a credible and holistic resource for water conservation. It brings together information and solutions from a wide range of sources, including government departments, industry associations, manufacturers and research institutions.
A one-stop shop for information on water conservation
We have prepared the savewater!® programs and website content with simplicity and accessibility in mind. Our aim is for savewater!® to become the one-stop source of information for anyone wanting to reduce water consumption while maximising economic or commercial opportunities. This might be through saving on the cost of water and energy supply or marketing the benefits of water saving products – it depends who you are and what you’re after.
Access to water conserving products
Some water savings will be achieved by behaviour change, but others will come about as a result of product developments and inclusion of those products in our everyday lives.
At a very practical level, savewater!® aims to help key professions, trades, industries and the general public, to improve their water efficiency by showcasing, describing and listing products and practices that can directly reduce water consumption.
Real life examples of water conservation in action
So how do you really save all this water? It’s hard to know where to start, so we’ve provided some real life examples to point you in the right direction. Case studies are presented in most areas of savewater.com.au to show how it has been done by people just like you.
The national savewater! awards® are designed to acknowledge leadership in water conservation. The awards are regarded as the most prestigious in Australia. By promoting the achievements of award winners, we hope to provide inspiration for others to follow their lead. The awards are currently conducted annually across Australia, and are open to businesses, government organisations, schools, community groups and individuals.
Local knowledge, experience and products
While you can find online information about water conservation in the USA or the UK, it doesn’t quite match the demands of our unique Australian environment. savewater!® aims to meet the vital need for geographically relevant information at local, regional and national level.
