World Oceans Day logo

Today is World Oceans Day. What are you doing to keep your oceans clean?

Today (June 8 ) is World Oceans Day, what are you doing to spread the word? On World Oceans Day people around the planet celebrate and honor the ocean, for what it represents and what it provides us with. To celebrate, how about giving green cleaning a go?

A bucket full of cleaning products

Living in a squeaky clean world often makes us scrub away with some heavy duty cleaning products to get that nice clean feel. With ingredients such as:

  • Formaldehyde: a carcinogen found in air fresheners.
  • Ammonia: a volatile chemical found in bathroom cleaners.
  • Chlorine: bad to inhale and found in dish detergents, bleaches, and plastics.

I know, we all get that sweet satisfaction from getting our ‘clean’ on however, using some very basic cleaning ingredients you can still get that squeaky feeling! And remember, because you’re keeping it nice and simple and using fewer harsh chemicals, the oceans will be smiling too.

Here are our top 5 hot tips to get that natural clean feel without using harsh chemicals:

  1. Air freshener: put two cups of boiling water into a small bowl and drop in 5 drops of eucalyptus essential oil. The lovely fresh vapor will kill smells in the stinkest of rooms.
  2. Sink cleaner: Fill a spray bottle with half water and half white vinegar. Spray the surface and leave for 2 minutes. Wipe off. Also is a fantastic window cleaner!
  3. Washing deodorizer: Smelly gym socks?? Add 2 teaspoons of eucalyptus oil to your load of washing for a fresh scent and clean feel.
  4. Dirty Shirt Cleaner: Simply spray vinegar onto the collar or underarms before putting them into the wash. Hang to dry in the sun!
  5. Toilet Cleaner: Use vinegar and leave to soak for 10 minutes. Shiny loo for you!
Bosisto's Eucalyptus

Bosisto's Eucalyptus is another great product, available at your local supermarket and worth a look.

Bicarbonate of soda is a very versatile and economical ingredient that can be used in cooking, cleaning and deodorising.  You can use it to increase the cleaning power of detergent without increasing the use of the detergent, e.g., adding a teaspoonful into the laundry or the sink for washups.  It is a great stovetop cleaner or for any other greasy areas, by just using it as a paste and wiping off after a while.  I also use it to clean the shower and to keep our fridge smelling fresh and odour-free.  Recently my son had a bad case of smelly shoes.  After 2 applications of bicarb, the shoes were ‘cured’!  You can even use it in place of dishwashing powder depending on your dishwasher.  To keep your drains fresh, use it with salt and vinegar.

Now I’m sure you’ll want to have some bicarb handy all the time like I do!

Vinegar is great to get rid of calcium buildup around bathroom taps.  Just let it soak for a couple of minutes and wipe off.  To clean the spout put some in a plastic bag or glad wrap and place around the spout with an elastic band to soak.

Use more “elbow grease” instead of an “easy fix aggressive chemical”.
